Taranto was founded as a Greek colony in 706 BC. Many ancient Greek artworks are housed inside the various museums throughout the city, such as the Magna Graecia. While the modern city has been built over the original, some ruins remain including part of the city wall, tombs, and two temple columns that date back to the 6th century BC. Taranto also has many other sites of historic value such as the Aragon Castle, the Promenade, and Old Town.
